HealthDesk is a program started by George Washington University with the mission to maximize the benefits of digital health technologies and platforms to improve individual health and well-being in Washington, D.C and throughout the country. By working with community and national organizations, HealthDesk achieves this through demonstrating to a wide audience how to access patient portals, optimize phones, and how to utilize digital health applications.

HealthDesk’s virtual educational platform focuses on creating and producing content on digital health tools. These digital health campaigns will provide HealthDesk’s partner organizations brief discussions, interviews, and instructional videos on the tools for self-management of health that will be distributed to their audience via social media and websites.

HealthDesk is currently seeking a multimedia and marketing intern with familiarity in video editing and graphic design, who is creative, detail oriented, and able to assist in marketing and media management.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Filming and editing campaign videos
  • Assist with creating and designing digital marketing content for social media
  • Brainstorming ideas for HealthDesk marketing strategy
  • Researching best digital media and communication strategies for the promotion of health
  • Participate in HealthDesk strategy meetings

Qualifications and Skills

  • Completed or currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in media, communications, marketing, public health or public relations. At least 1 year of degree program completed.
  • Experience with Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Detail oriented, creative, self-starter
  • Basic computer skills and experience in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience working with/ marketing to residents southeast Washington, D.C (Recommended)
  • Familiarity with Hootsuite (recommended)

Additional Information

  • This internship is unpaid (academic credit only*)
  • Hours: 10-15 hrs hours per week · The location of the position will be based in GWMFA’s 2120 L street NW building. However, the position will work remotely until further notice.

Medical Student Volunteers

Medical Student Volunteer Program

We are excited to offer a meaningful volunteer opportunity to work directly with GW HealthDesk and patients at Unity Health Care clinics across DC. Unity is transitioning to MyChart as the primary platform for patients to access health information, communicate with providers, and manage their care. Many patients will need extra support getting connected, setting up accounts, and learning how to use the system.
 

What you will do

  • Assist with patient portal sign up and password resets
  • Walk patients through core MyChart features
  • Provide general digital health support in clinic waiting areas
  • Answer questions and help troubleshoot device issues
  • Contribute to quality improvement and patient-education materials
     

Training and schedule

  • One required training session (~2 hours)
  • Complete 1–2 introductory shifts in the GWUH ED before clinic placement
  • Flexible time commitment, typically three 4-hour shifts between October and January
  • Leadership and research opportunities available

Student Digital Health Coach Program

Student Digital Health Coach (SDHC) Program – Sibley JHU Sponsored

The SDHC program trains high school and college students from across DC to support digital health basics in Unity Health Care clinics, focusing on Wards 7 and 8. Coaches help patients enroll in MyChart, connect with telehealth, and build confidence using smartphones and other tools.

Key details

  • Who: DC high school juniors/seniors and college students
  • Applications: Rolling, open in early spring
  • Time: 6–10 hours per week during Spring and Summer cohorts
  • Support: Stipend provided
  • Impact: Over 300 patient connections annually, with strong community feedback
     

What you will do

Welcome patients and identify digital health needs

  • Support MyChart sign up and feature use
  • Provide basic phone skills coaching and resource referrals
  • Track encounters and share feedback
